What kind of RP do you like

  • Hello!

I want to know what kind of RP you like. There are players who only play with people they know, others are looking for publicly accessible RP. Some like to play slice of life, others like adventures or (planned/guided) plots. Some like to be a game master in a plot, others not at all. And some characters seem to be at home in every tavern. And that is certainly only the tip of the iceberg. Tell me a bit about your preferences.

I'll start right away and have to admit that I'm leaning a bit in all directions. :D

Basically, I like to have a reasonably fixed RP group around me (can be within a guild or a project, but doesn't have to be), but it should still be accessible to outsiders. Every now and then I also like to play with just one other person or a smaller group, as this gives everyone more opportunities to develop in the RP.

Character development is close to my heart, so I find a good mix of slice of life and adventures/plots important, because if you're just rushing from one adventure to the next, there's sometimes not enough time to internalise what's happening. But you also need these experiences to have something to talk about in everyday RP.

Huge events, on the other hand, are less my thing. Depending on how good/comfortable the chat is in the game, there is simply a certain limit beyond which it can become exhausting to follow what is happening or to hear when you are spoken to. Every now and then I take part in big events and it's also fun. But (as a player) it is usually not relaxing.

    Greetings Kinman

  • Hello there, i thought i might add my voice to this discussion.

So the last MMORPG was WOW (round the time of BC through to MOP) i was in a solid group who came together to do a bit of casual raiding/questing etc. But alas this was not a RP group. Also RD2 online was a similar thing. So what i am saying is im very new to thing, but by the gods have i dreamed of something like Pax Dei!

Anyway so i could possibly say this for what type of Role-player id be judging from my actions in past games and real life ( i did some LARP and DnD too)

Im no leader, in Rl or in game. I look to others for sure for guidance. I am totally happy venturing on my own but always very excited to be part of a smaller team doing.. well anything! and be it just spending an evening around the fire telling stories. Big groups i tend to go under, although from time to time thats obv. cool too. I can also say for sure that i love to help. I get a great reward from it, so much to the point, that i dont mind loosing out on stuff if it helps another player. Because i wont be online all day every day sadly, but that means that i can help build someone up who is more serious.

I love all things animalistic/ nature/ wild / shamanic / ancient. I hope you can have a pet type follower... and if not ill be the pet type hunter ..follower to someone else? Yes i think that would so be me... some feral wildling youngen, at home in the wilderness, that will need some time to adjust to civil life. But loyal and dependable to the core!

Peace and love to all :)

  • Hello!

My previous RP experience is primarily slice-of-life and structured TTRPGs. I would be interested in both slice-of-life and adventures in Pax Dei, and while a fixed group sounds nice, I also enjoy being able to observe and join in on more publicly accessible RP. I find huge events are cooler in theory than practice since it's easy to get overwhelmed and lose the thread of people talking to you.

I love getting to develop my character and see other people's characters in great detail, so I agree that plenty of slice-of-life needs to be mixed in among the adventures.

Overall, I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the Pax Dei RP community grows!

Oh, and I'm considering playing a bard or poet, so I'd be interested in documenting the adventures of other characters in story and song, from an in-universe perspective!

  • Hi there!

Personally, I like a good mix of adventure, slice of life and good intrigue.
Unfortunately, the latter is rare and often intrigues ends in ooc drama.
Still, I like them when they are well roleplayed.

I also like to play with fire in RP.
However, there are some things I absolutely cannot do without in RP, no matter how much fantasy there is in the setting: logic, basic knowledge & consequences.
A healer who cleanses open wounds with alcohol, or a mage who, after summoning an earthquake, complains about collapsing walls... I can't take seriously.

Character development is also very important to me. I often start with a character who is still at the beginning of their potential, because I find it exciting to find out where the character is heading.
In contrast to people who start out as high priests, archmages and dragon slayers, such a character may seem boring and uninteresting, but the page is still blank.

I'd prefer to be part of a group of players, but that's also something that needs to develop. I'm just as happy wandering around on my own as I am playing with lots of different groups. However, it's important to me that you don't just limit yourself to your own little bubble. Trade, diplomacy, power struggles etc. with other groups are fun and bring life into the game.

You can find me at tavern evenings, secret ritual meetings, espionage meetings, as well as large and small events.
I rarely stay long at large events, however, as I simply lose track too quickly if you can't split up into smaller groups.

I love taking part in plots or offering one myself. And I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all works out.

    Greetings

  • I love a mix of adventure RP with some easygoing tavern RP. I generally don't like playing magic users, as they always end up feeling too OP for me. I'd rather slash, stab, or shoot things. I tend to RP on the more realistic side of things, so characters that are unreasonably Grand or Powerful tend to turn me off of RP with those individuals.

I really enjoy plots for the adventure side of me, but casual pick-up RP at a tavern or campsite is great too, and some of my best character development has come out of those little interactions. I lean towards interacting in smaller groups of players and find it too hard to keep up with a ton of text scrolling.

I'm the same in that I like starting my characters at the beginning so I can watch them grow and develop their personality and relationships with others. I lean towards altaholism, but with Pax Dei, I'll probably be limited, so that's probably a good thing!

I'm also a total lore junkie, so I'll probably be some explorer/adventurer who delves into ancient ruins with much joy. The more haunted, the better!

I'm really excited to see how this game world develops and the stories we can weave!

  • Like other said above, I'm into a mix of both adventure and slice of life as a complementary. I get bored easily if tavern RP lead to nowhere but small talks. That's why I avoid GTA & RDR2 RP or casual Stormwind afk on WoW. I rather join a guild, get on events where my character's life could be threatened by various injuries including death.

I tend to play one main character, with enough knowledge to start a journey on their own, but not enough experience to get rid of a bunch of thugs alone. I'd write my BG regarding the lore available and I'd try to stick to it, but I'm open to lore bending on a certain level if it allows campaign possibilities, and not pure GMOD. On a character development side, I rather make my OC maturing through the up and downs he'll meet: death of an ally, first kiss & partnership, making friends, betrayals etc.

Overall, I'd prefer make a bond with a few people (in a bromance way) to form a group, then get inserted to large community-scaled events.

Last but not least, I like a bit of "hardcore" RP which leads to slower character evolution in terme of high manufactured equipment, skills learnings: it's kind of rewarding to me. I wrote a "bit", because I don't want to feel obligated to RP every evening either to spam events and get slow down by real life priorities. (Conan Exiles experience)

    Cya,

  • I'll just examplify:

Playing Neverwinter Nights online on an RP-required server I grouped up with some fellow dwarves. We hung out when playing, doing dwarf stuff; mining, singing and drinking ale. We formed a guild (even though that wasn't a function in the game) and recruited more dwarves. Our guild acted as a neutral faction beteen good and evil groups. 1½ years of it and we had 80 members making me believe the server was bigger than it was - a DM told me after the server shut down that about 2/3 of the players on the server had alts in the our guild. Learning to know all those chars and all those players has been one of the best RP experiences in my life. Almost 20 years ago now and some of the people I met through there are still my friends today.

    The feels eh!

Love me a mix of everything, there is an interesting dynamic involved when you have to actively stop and think about "What is an appropriate reaction from my 'character' and not the person playing it" and this allows people to express themselves in ways that they likely would never consider in person.

Adventures are great, everyone loves shiny new things that they find which make them look awesome. So are the random conversations standing by a road or sitting in the taverns. Or the sense of possibilities as you and your allies make plans and plot your goals.

The social element and sense of immersion from an engaged RP community can be something of beauty. But in regards to Pax Dei specifically and with it not being a role play enforced environment (It's an MMO sandbox with a medievalist setting) I feel that 'Light Roleplay' will be the predominant theme especially with bigger clans and smaller groups enforcing their own levels of it. So there is nothing akin to "Your character only knows what they have seen or heard in-game" which is still fine if perhaps a bit metagamey.

Just my thoughts really, they are random and fickle things at best :)

  • As I wrote in my intro:

    Quote

I enjoy social roleplaying like intrigues and place-oriented stuff like running an inn or some shady business down in a basement. My philosophy is to help create atmosphere where people feel allowed to participate no matter if they appear once a week or hang around like an evil mother-in-law all their online time.

While I am by no means an hardcore-ingame-chat roleplayer any longer I tend to keep things in character if there is RP happening just to help create said atmosphere. I dislike powergaming (roleplaying just slaughtering everything without any other players consent) and other destructive behaviors unless they are previously agreed upon OOC and fills a purpose in a plot / story.

I tend to shy away a little from the "lol, m8, can I buy 4 axes from u plz, got gold"-kind of stuff, but I also realize that everyone need to start somewhere and I'd rather give someone a platform to learn and develop their RP than to shut someone out because they lack experience.

EDIT 1: I also enjoy creating looks and feels for guillds / clans that make them visually separable from each other and if I play a crook I tend to try to at least dress as one while I RP.

Couldn't agree more, this is true RP for me, roleplaying my character even if that means that the character sometimes has vastly other opinions (or morals) on things compared to myself as a player. Roleplaying for me is about developing a character via living a story together with others doing the same thing.
